Bay Area Carpenter

I have friends, family, and clients past & prospective who ask "Hey Ron, what are you up to these day's", so I thought I'd blog my way along the path to show any one who's interested. I think this will also be a great motivator for me to start documenting my work. My memory is the only place I have stored so much of the coolest stuff I've done. There is no excuse I can give for this as my education is in documentary and journalism photography. They say the cobbler's shoes are in the worst repair, and now I know exactly what they are talking about.

To start this off I'll go back to the first project I have photo's of, and work my way forward. It was in 2004 when I did a deck for Dan Heath. His home is on the back side of the El Cerrito hills, and it has a view to die for. The deck looks through massive redwood trees out over rolling hills without a structure, or power line in sight. I told him it would be a shame to block the view with a bulking traditional railing. I recommended a cable railing system, one, because it's less visually obtrusive, and two, because it's strong and safe. Safety was important as his deck is 20 feet off the ground.

After looking at what was on the market the bulkiness of the handrail and posts not to mention the unreal price didn't meet our needs. I told Dan I could fabricate a railing system for half the price, and could make it much less bulky. Graciously, he let me run with it. Here are some pictures of what I came up with.
